How to Take Food Photos for the Most Accurate Scan

Updated over a month ago

Logging your meals with a photo is incredibly fast and easy. But to help our AI assistant analyze the calories and nutrients accurately, a good, clear photo is essential.

A clear picture helps the our assistant "understand" exactly what's on your plate. When the our assistant gets it right, the calorie and "Serving" data in your app is far more accurate. This, in turn, helps you manage your daily "Calorie Goal" more effectively and reach your health targets faster.

Try adjusting your angle and paying attention to these few simple details.

4 Simple Tips for a More Accurate Scan

1.Use a Top-Down View

This is the best angle. It allows the our assistant to see everything on the plate at once and clearly identify all the different components.

2.Make Sure You Have Enough Light

Try to take your photo in a well-lit area. Avoid dark shadows that hide parts of the food. Good lighting helps the AI identify food types and details much more easily.

3.Add an Object for Scale

This is a great trick to improve accuracy. Try placing a spoon, your finger, or a card next to your plate before you snap the picture. This gives the AI a reference point to estimate the true portion size of the food.

4.Keep Components Separate

If possible, try not to stack your food so much that things get hidden. If you have rice and a main dish, try to show both clearly. If your sauce comes in a separate bowl, place it next to the plate instead of pouring it over everything first.

How Should I Take Photos at a Buffet?

Buffets can be challenging, especially when you're starting out. It's much more complex than a single-dish meal. However, you can still log your food to get a very close estimate.

The most important rule is to log everything you eat. This keeps your calorie count realistic and prevents you from going over your goal without realizing it.

  • Take a photo of every single plate. Before you start eating each new plate of food, snap a clear photo. Try to capture everything you picked up.

  • Don't forget drinks and dessert. Remember to also log any drinks (other than water) and any desserts you have. These are major sources of hidden calories.

Your Most Important Job: Review and Adjust

After you upload your photos, our AI assistant will analyze them and show you an itemized list of what it thinks you ate.

Your most important job is to review this list. If something is incorrect, or the portion size looks wrong, you can easily tap to edit, add, or delete items yourself.

The key here is honesty with yourself. Do your best to review and adjust the portions to be as accurate as possible. This makes your app's data reliable and helps you plan your next meals to stay balanced and within your goal.
